Northern Territory Migration

The Northern Territory recently came out with its State Occupation List in January. The Northern Territory Migration State Occupation List is a list of occupations that the NT State Government believes are in demand in the NT and eligible for NT nomination under the General Skilled Migration Program (Subclass 190 or 489 visa).

The list is huge and includes hundreds of occupations, many of which were not available on any other state list. Please refer to the NT Government website for a full list of requirements here

What this means is that occupations which previously had no chance of obtaining a permanent work visa to Australia, now may have options. For example occupations like Enrolled Nurse is on the Northern Territory Migration list, whilst it is not on many other lists.

General Skilled Migration Requirements:

To be able to apply for Northern Territory Migration, you must still meet the general skilled migration requirements. These requirements include:

  • Lodge an EOI and be invited by DOHA to apply
  • Meet the pass mark in the skilled migration points test – currently 65.
  • Be aged between 18 and 45 years
  • Hold a positive Skills Assessment in an occupation that is on the Northern Territory Migration List
  • Have Competent English or higher (6 minimum in IELTS or holder of approved passports)
  • Meet health and character requirements

Northern Territory Nomination Requirements:

Even if you meet the General Skilled Migration requirements, you must also meet the Northern Territory Nomination Requirements. You would then need to submit a nomination application directly with the NT Migration. NT Migration has different requirements based on whether you applying from offshore, whether you studied in NT, or whether you have lived in NT for 6 months. Each one of these scenarios have different requirements. Please refer to the NT website for a full list of nomination requirements.
